Howe Sound is world renowned for its wild natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and the vibrant communities we call home. We value intact ecosystems that sustain and support our communities, our livelihoods, and our diverse local economies.

The proposed Woodfibre LNG project is based on faulty economics, will harm marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and poses an unacceptable health and safety risk for the communities of Howe Sound. This project does not fit our values.

We call on the Provincial and Federal governments to reject the Woodfibre LNG project and its associated pipelines and tankers.

The blame game about who notified which authority when it happened, that’s just diversionary tactics to take the attention away from the real problems. The oceans, and waters are our canary if we keep this up, then we won’t sustain. Aside from the obvious-reduce, reuse, recycle let’s not endorse companies that don’t. We are to blame with our “needyness” as much as the bigger corporations. Oceans need protection.

Most especially after seeing the disaster that happened this past week in the waters near Stanley Park with the fuel spill, I have to say that we are not prepared for these levels of problems or anything worse. I never wanted the LNG pipeline or any other pipeline to go through and MOST surely do not want one now. NO to industry in our Howe Sound areas.

Woodfibre LNG is not the answer. We need more innovative projects that pose less risk to our health & environment.

For 30 years I have lived in Britannia Beach. When I moved here, our federal government declared it to be the worst point source of mineral contamination in North America. Across Howe Sound was the Woodfibre Pulp and Paper mill spilling furans and dioxins into the waters and emitting acid rain and CO2. Squamish had a chlorine plant that dumped mercury into the environment that made a lot of the local cherry trees infertile. All of these sources have been cleaned up and Howe Sound is recovering. Herring are back. Blue mussels and algae bloom and flourish, Salmon are returning in record numbers with dophins, orcas and whales also frequenting the waters again. Why would we put this at risk given all the concerns from bad economics to the impact of fracking? Keep Howe Sound the magical place it is and hands off. We have been forgiven our sins once already.
