Learn about your candidates

This is My Sea to Sky's assessment of the candidates' position on Woodfibre LNG, Garibaldi at Squamish, and the Cheema Lands, based on the Squamish Chief's questionnaire, past voting records, and recent public statements. Where candidates did not respond to the Squamish Chief questionnaire we reached out to them directly. We also asked candidates to clarify their position on a post in the Facebook group Squamish 2018 Elections, and adjusted their responses to better reflect their position on each of these issues. For more nuanced positions on each of these proposals we recommend that you visit the candidate's websites and facebook pages.

* More Information:

Councillor Susan Chapelle

We have indicated that Councillor Susan Chapelle is supportive of Woodfibre LNG based on her previous voting record, recent statements on social media and at all-candidates forums, and columns in the Squamish Chief. Throughout her terms as a councillor, Susan Chapelle has consistently expressed strong support for Woodfibre LNG both inside and outside of council chambers.

In July 2014, Councillor Chapelle wrote a column expressing support for Woodfibre LNG in the Squamish Chief.

On 2015-01-20 Councillor Chapelle voted in favour of allowing FortisBC to drill test boreholes in the Squamish estuary. Read the council minutes.

On 2015-04-28 Councillor Chapelle voted in opposition to sending a letter to the BC Environmental Assessment Office stating that the Woodfibre LNG project is not supportable as it stands. Read the council minutes.

On 2018-05-08 Councillor Chapelle voted to direct "staff to explore a potential lease agreement with Woodfibre LNG for District owned road/land at Darrell Bay." Read the council minutes.

On 2018-09-28 Councillor Chapelle clarified that she is supportive of Woodfibre LNG in Squamish 2018 Elections.

Eric Andersen

Eric Andersen originally indicated that he is "Somewhat Supportive" of Garibaldi at Squamish, and requested that we change his response on this project to "Neutral" to better reflect his concerns about the project.

Edward Archibald

Edward Archibald originally indicated that he is "Neutral" on Woodfibre LNG, and expressed some support for the project on Sea2Sky podcast, however at the all-candidates forum on the environment, Edward Archibald expressed opposition to Woodfibre LNG, in particular concerns about climate impacts. Watch the video from the all-candidates forum on the environment to learn more, starting at 14:30 and 1:03:30. We have therefore changed Edward's position on Woodfibre LNG to "Opposed."

Sacha Fabry

Sacha originally indicated that he was "Somewhat Opposed" to Woodfibre LNG, and "Somewhat Supportive" of Garibaldi at Squamish and the Cheema Lands. However Sacha expressed concern that the nuance of his positions has been lost and requested that we change his responses for all three projects to "Neutral."

Lee O'Callaghan

Lee O'Callaghan originally indicated that he was "Somewhat Supportive" of Woodfibre LNG, however at the all-candidates forum on the environment, Lee O'Callaghan expressed opposition to both Woodfibre LNG and the FortisBC compressor station. Watch the video from the all-candidates forum on the environment to learn more, starting at 26:40. We have therefore changed Lee's position on Woodfibre LNG to "Opposed."

Bianca Peters

Bianca Peters originally indicated that she is "Somewhat Opposed" to all three projects, however she later clarified on Squamish 2018 Elections that her response was neutral. We have therefore changed Bianca Peter's position on all three projects to "Neutral."

Doug Race

Like Councillor Chapelle, Doug Race also voted in support of allowing FortisBC to drill test boreholes in the Squamish estuary on 2015-01-20, and voted in opposition to sending a letter to the BC Environmental Office stating that the Woodfibre LNG project is not supportable as it stands on 2015-04-28. Throughout his position on the District's LNG Technical Advisory Committee, Doug Race also continued to express support for the Woodfibre LNG. However, Doug Race's selection of "Somewhat Supportive" in response to Woodfibre LNG is accurate, therefore we have indicated that he is "Supportive."

With regards to Garibaldi at Squamish, Doug Race indicated very strong concern about the proposed development, stating in response to one of the questions at the all-candidates forum on the environment where we asked "What do you see as the three greatest threats to wildlife, habitat, and ecosystem health in Squamish?" Doug Race responded that "For me there are three main threats: Garibaldi at Squamish, Garibaldi at Squamish, Garibaldi at Squamish." Watch the video from the all-candidates forum on the environment to learn more, starting at 31:20.

Jenna Stoner

Jenna Stoner originally indicated that she is "Somewhat Supportive" of Woodfibre LNG, however she clarified her position, stating that she is opposed to LNG development in Squamish 2018 Elections. We have therefore changed Jenna Stoner's position on Woodfibre LNG to "Opposed."
