Howe Sound is world renowned for its wild natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and the vibrant communities we call home. We value intact ecosystems that sustain and support our communities, our livelihoods, and our diverse local economies.

The proposed Woodfibre LNG project is based on faulty economics, will harm marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and poses an unacceptable health and safety risk for the communities of Howe Sound. This project does not fit our values.

We call on the Provincial and Federal governments to reject the Woodfibre LNG project and its associated pipelines and tankers.

The construction of an LNG terminal at the head of Howe Sound is not only hugely damaging for the local marine and human environment. This damage would occur, furthermore, after we finally ousted the pulp mill at Woodfibre with the improvements that delivered for all in the Sound. This new investment will, by the time it has been completed, be a stranded asset. The hydrocarbon complex is over. The price of renewable energy is falling so rapidly and the alternatives growing so fast that on market dynamics alone, further investment in LNG is a dead letter. All the subsidies that we taxpayers are being forced by an irresponsible government to inject into the project will be lost. We should observe that oil-land Texas, yes Texas, is the largest user of renewable energy in the US, and this is just because of market price dynamics. Surely BC and Canada do not wish to be even more backward than Texas? Serious investment in alternative energy has not even been attempted in Canada except by private citizens, who receive nothing in exchange for their sacrifice. Meanwhile big oil and gas continue to receive our taxpayer subsidies by the billion. They and the politicians deserve long prison sentences for the deliberate damage they do instead. The politicians do not even follow their own laws and procedures. This proposed investment and the flawed process confirms that rule.

During this time of climate crisis, it is painfully obvious that we need to be moving away from all fossil fuel use, including LNG, not expanding infrastructure.

Methane from LNG has been under-reported and makes natural gas a major climate pollutant.

Methane is an extremely potent greenhouse gas and has an atmospheric lifespan is only around 10 years, much less than carbon dioxide’s so limiting LNG is a quick win for the climate.

Is this project really worth risking the wellbeing of our ocean and wildlife in one of the most beautiful places on earth? That for a few jobs and $?? Please think again. You have the power and responsibility to lead the change and be stewards of this unique Sound.

The concept that Natural gas is clean energy must be challenged. The extraction process on top of the burning adds the GHG. The concept that coal burning will be reduced by availability of LNG is false. Fossil products must stay in the ground and remain sequestered and this should be our goal. This is a crisis and an emergency but it is being treated like a curiosity by our political leadership. This must change. Stop LNG exports. Figure out how we go forward with less rather than more fossil energy. Figure it out NOW before it is too late.
