Howe Sound is world renowned for its wild natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and the vibrant communities we call home. We value intact ecosystems that sustain and support our communities, our livelihoods, and our diverse local economies.

The proposed Woodfibre LNG project is based on faulty economics, will harm marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and poses an unacceptable health and safety risk for the communities of Howe Sound. This project does not fit our values.

We call on the Provincial and Federal governments to reject the Woodfibre LNG project and its associated pipelines and tankers.

LNG is not environmentally sound, esp. in the cost to forever damaging water supplies in its production, in the earthquakes such production manifests in surrounding communities, and in the danger of spills. There are greener energy technologies our governments should be encouraging and pursuing to boost the economy and create jobs: wind, solar, geothermal, water turbines. “If you love this planet…..”

The construction of an LNG terminal at the head of Howe Sound is not only hugely damaging for the local marine and human environment. This damage would occur, furthermore, after we finally ousted the pulp mill at Woodfibre with the improvements that delivered for all in the Sound. This new investment will, by the time it has been completed, be a stranded asset. The hydrocarbon complex is over. The price of renewable energy is falling so rapidly and the alternatives growing so fast that on market dynamics alone, further investment in LNG is a dead letter. All the subsidies that we taxpayers are being forced by an irresponsible government to inject into the project will be lost. We should observe that oil-land Texas, yes Texas, is the largest user of renewable energy in the US, and this is just because of market price dynamics. Surely BC and Canada do not wish to be even more backward than Texas? Serious investment in alternative energy has not even been attempted in Canada except by private citizens, who receive nothing in exchange for their sacrifice. Meanwhile big oil and gas continue to receive our taxpayer subsidies by the billion. They and the politicians deserve long prison sentences for the deliberate damage they do instead. The politicians do not even follow their own laws and procedures. This proposed investment and the flawed process confirms that rule.
